Chuck's Column - 1/20/08

I will be facilitating a three week discussion on Sunday evenings (February 24, March 2 and March 9 from 5:00-6:00) based on the book, Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy, published by Jossey-Bass, and authored by Donald B. Kraybill, Steven M. Nolt, and David L. Weaver-Zercher. According to Philip Yancey, "Amish Grace dissects the deep-rooted pattern of Amish forgiveness and grace that, after the Nickel Mines tragedy, caused the world to gasp." According to writer and educator Parker Palmer this is "one of those rare books that inspires deep personal reflection while recounting a moment in history, telling a sociological story, and exploring theological issues."

The following is a listing of the chapters:

  1. The Nickel Mines Amish
  2. The Shooting
  3. The Aftermath
  4. The Surprise
  5. The Reactions
  6. The Habit of Forgiveness
  7. The Roots of Forgiveness
  8. The Spirituality of Forgiveness
  9. The Practice of Forgiveness
  10. Forgiveness at Nickel Mines
  11. What About Shunning?
  12. Grief, Providence, and Justice
  13. Amish Grace and the Rest of Us

The book is available at many bookstores or can be ordered online from Amazon.com and other book sellers. If you need assistance in purchasing the book, contact the church office and we can order it for you.

I welcome questions from those of you reading and studying Matthew. You can email me with your questions, or stop by my study/office or give me a call. If you would like me to visit your Sunday School class and field questions, I would be glad to do that as well.

Servants together,
Chuck
